Updating the AutoVent Controller App – Support Guide

How to update the firmware and app on AutoVent controllers. Connect over USB, drop the file into the System Firmware folder, and the controller updates itself while keeping your settings.

The cable you need

The controller has a mini USB port, more of an older camera standard. You connect a laptop to it with a USB cable.

Updating the .b1n file in a controller

This is the standard update. You connect the controller to your laptop, where it appears as a digital camera, then drag the new app file into its System Firmware folder.

  1. Connect the laptop and controller with a USB cord. The controller has a mini USB port, more of an older camera standard.
  2. Find the controller in your computer. It shows up as a digital camera.

The controller appears in your file browser as a device (here named AutoVent430), circled in red.
  3. Expand the icon so you can see the System Firmware folder.
Windows file browser with the AutoVent430 device expanded to show its Internal Storage and System Firmware folders, with System Firmware circled in red
Expand the device to reveal the System Firmware folder (circled).
  4. Save the emailed file to the desktop.
  5. Drag the file from the desktop into the System Firmware folder.
  6. Watch the controller screen. It will go black and say it is receiving a new app. If something goes wrong it will say file corrupted. Otherwise it is finished. All settings are retained.

Updating and wipe (zeroing all settings)

At times all the settings need to be defaulted on the controllers. This section is about defaulting parameters when the unit is not booting correctly.

  1. Read the directions on how to update in Updating the .b1n file in a controller above.
  2. Drop the ZERO_DEFAULTS.b1n into the System Firmware folder. The screen should then turn black with white text. If the screen did not change, it did not receive the file correctly – try again. Wait about 5 seconds.

Drop the file into the System Firmware folder under the controller (here named AV430_1901).
  3. Drop the *.b1n file (specific per model) into the System Firmware folder. Wait about 10 seconds.
  4. If the controller displays the P1220 screen, Max relays in system: set it to the number of relays in the system (ask for the correct value, but normally the amount of output relays). Press Save.

  5. Power cycle the controller.

Notes & troubleshooting

  • If the controller stops communicating with the laptop, disconnect USB and power cycle the controller.
  • If you accidentally drop the file into the Internal Storage, just leave it be, but you may need to wait 60 seconds before doing any other file transfer.
  • Always save the .b1n and .srec files to your desktop or hard drive. It will not work to drag them directly from your email program into the controller.
  • Occasionally the files get their permissions changed by the laptop’s virus checking. The files need to be unblocked.
  • If the .b1n or .srec files just don’t work, try deleting them from your desktop and downloading again.

Updating firmware (.SREC file)

At times the underlying operating system needs to be updated to accommodate new features. This may require updating the .SREC file. The process is similar to a .b1n update, except that two files are updated in sequence rather than just one.

  1. Drop in the SREC file. Due to supply chain disruptions there are two .srec files, and there is no easy way to tell which one you will need. If the controller takes it, it was the right one. When a controller takes it, the screen goes black and text shows up saying it is updating. It will sit there for about a minute digesting the new file. Once it is done the screen will come back on, but look very different.
  2. Drop in your .b1n file. It should only take a couple of seconds for it to digest the file and the screen to return to what was normal. It is basically finished now.
  3. Double-check your settings. The setpoints should have survived the process. However, there may be new ones.
Tip: if neither .srec file is accepted, confirm the files are saved to your desktop and unblocked, then try downloading them again.
